Gulf states reaffirm support for Moroccan sovereignty

Members of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) have reaffirmed their support for Moroccan sovereignty over the disputed Western Sahara territory, as reported by Maghrebi Week on March 23rd.

Support for Resolution 2797, also known as the Moroccan Autonomy Plan, was expressed during the 8th Morocco-GCC Joint Ministerial Meeting, held remotely on March 12th.

Under this plan, the Western Sahara would be granted limited self-governance under Moroccan sovereignty. The plan received widespread international support at the UN Security Council vote on October 31st, 2025, with the Gulf states joining 130 other nations in backing Morocco’s proposal as a solution to the long-standing dispute.
