Libya tows drifting Russian tanker from western coast
Libya began towing a drifting Russian tanker away from its western coast, turning a maritime hazard into successful environmental control and state coordination, as reported by The Libya Gazette on March 30th.
The damaged vessel had drifted unmanned for weeks before nearing Zuwara, forcing Libyan authorities to assign the National Oil Corporation responsibility for unloading its cargo and coordinating the response.
The operation demonstrates Libya’s role on a fragile Mediterranean frontier, where environmental risks, maritime security, and wider regional instability increasingly converge.
