Amid growing internal strife linked to jihadist insurgencies and Tuareg separatist rebels, a UN report has accused Mali’s military junta government of becoming increasingly authoritarian, as reported by Maghrebi Week on March 30th.

On March 25th, Eduardo Gonzalez, a UN expert on human rights, presented a report at the 61st session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, detailing political, civic, and security issues in Mali between April 4th and November 30th, 2025.

Since seizing power in 2021, the junta has passed legislation to extend General Assimi Goïta’s presidency until 2030; Goïta has also dissolved rival political parties and failed to hold free elections, despite promising to do so upon his rise to power.
