The trial of Algeria’s former Minister of Industry and Pharmaceutical Production Ali Aoun has started in an Algiers tribunal, reports Le Matin d’Algerie on 8rd April. The investigation revealed a corruption network involving multiple trips to Mauritania by a close associate of Aoun as well as suspicious bank transfers.

Aoun has been charged with abuse of office, corruption and misuse of public funds. A number of other figures have also been charged, including an intermediary known as “Nounou Monita”, high profile businessmen and Aoun’s son.

Algeria has been cracking down on corruption with a number of high profile cases in recent years.
