Mauritania and Morocco discuss defence ties

Amid rising regional tensions in North Africa, Morocco and Mauritania met in Nouakchott to discuss defence cooperation, as Maghrebi Week reported on April 13th.

Morocco’s delegation was led by Inspector General of Royal Armed Forces and Commander of the South Zone, Lt. General Mohamed Berrid, who was greeted at Nouakchott military airport by General Mohamed Ould Fal al-Raïs, Chief of Staff of Mauritania Armed Forces.

Both countries are facing growing instability due to the presence of the Algerian-backed Polisario Front, a separatist military that allegedly launched an incursion along Mauritania’s border with Algeria in May 2025, which prompted Mauritania to reinforce its border.
