A student opened fire at a middle school in southeastern Turkey, killing four people and injuring at least 20 others, according to reports published by Al-Monitor via Reuters on April 15th. The incident marked the country’s second school shooting in just two days, raising concerns about safety and security in educational institutions.

The attack took place in the province of Kahramanmaras, where three students and one teacher were killed. Local governor Mukerrem Unluer confirmed the casualties and stated that the shooter, an eighth-grade student at the school, also died during the incident.

Authorities reported that the student used firearms that belonged to their father, which had been concealed inside the student’s backpack before being brought onto the school grounds. Emergency services quickly responded to the scene, with ambulances transporting injured victims to nearby hospitals while police secured the area. Television footage showed large crowds gathering outside the school as the situation unfolded.

Officials emphasised that school shootings are extremely rare in Turkey, making the incident particularly shocking for local communities. In response to the attack, Justice Minister Akin Gurlek announced that a formal investigation had been launched to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting and how the student obtained access to the weapons.

The tragedy occurred only one day after another shooting in the southeastern province of Sanliurfa. In that earlier incident, a former student opened fire at a school, injuring at least 16 people, including both students and teachers, before taking his own life.

The two consecutive attacks have drawn national attention and prompted renewed discussions about school safety and access to firearms in Turkey. Authorities are expected to continue their investigations into both incidents as communities across the country mourn the victims and seek out answers about how such gun violence could occur within educational settings.
