Ghanaian footballer Dominic Frimpong has died after suspected armed robbers opened fire at the bus carrying his team, Berekum Chelsea, from their match against Samartex, according to BBC News and agencies on April 13th.

Dominic Frimpong played for his team, Berekum Chelsea, against Samartex, losing 1-0 on April 12th.

While on the way back from Samreboi, south of Ghana, 270km (170 miles) away from Berekum, masked men blocked the road where their location was between Goaso and Bibiani and opened fire on the bus as the driver was putting it into reverse.

Around 30 players and staff were on the bus, which dove into nearby bushes to take cover from the shots fired.

Officials described the alleged attackers as masked men wielding guns and assault rifles. Police have said that Frimpong sustained bullet wounds and died during the treatment. The police have started a manhunt for the attackers.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) released a statement, offering its condolences to Frimpong’s family and the entire Berekum Chelsea club.

They paid tribute to Frimpong by describing him as a “promising young talent whose dedication and passion for the game embodied the spirit of our league.”

Frimpong had been on loan at Berekum Chelsea from Aduana FC since January and was set to stay until the end of the season. He had scored 2 goals in 13 appearances for the club since he joined.

This comes at a time when they have been a great success and hope for African football on the pitch, with the record number of African teams reaching the World Cup in the summer.

There is great hope and optimism over the Ghana national football team, even though they failed to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in January.

Reportedly, Ghana still has quality players who can compete on the world stage in the summer against EnglandCroatia, and Panama.
