Mali and Morocco face shared struggle against separatists
The growing alliance between Morocco and Mali has led the countries to confront their shared struggle against separatist rebels, as reported by Maghrebi Week on April 20th.
Mali’s confirmation of support for Moroccan sovereignty over the Western Sahara on April 10th led both countries to discuss the threat posed by separatists, such as the Algerian-backed Polisario Front and Tuareg separatist rebels in northern Mali.
Polisario and Tuareg militants both operate in the Mauritanian border regions; Polisario operate near the northeastern Algerian border, while Tuareg rebels operate near the southern border with Mali, particularly in Mali’s northern Kidal region.
