President Joseph Aoun stated that planned negotiations with Israel aim to end ongoing violence and secure stability in southern Lebanon, according to a report published by Al-Monitor via AFP on 20 April. The announcement comes shortly after a temporary ceasefire paused more than six weeks of fighting between Israel and the armed group Hezbollah.

In a public statement, Aoun explained that negotiations are intended to achieve concrete security goals for the country. He said the objective is to “stop hostilities, end the Israeli occupation of southern regions and deploy the army all the way to the internationally recognised southern borders.” The president also emphasised that dialogue is necessary to secure long-term peace, adding that Lebanon now faces a choice between continued conflict or diplomatic engagement.

US President Donald Trump had previously announced a 10-day truce that temporarily halted the fighting. However, tensions have continued despite the ceasefire. Lebanese media reported an Israeli drone strike in the southern town of Qaqaiyat al-Jisr, as well as artillery shelling near the border community of Hula. The Israeli military stated that its forces had targeted individuals it described as violating the ceasefire terms.

The proposed negotiations have sparked strong opposition within Lebanon, particularly among Hezbollah supporters. Hezbollah lawmaker Hassan Fadlallah argued that direct talks with Israel could undermine national unity. He warned that entering bilateral negotiations during a period of political division “constitutes a threat to internal consensus.” At the same time, he acknowledged that maintaining a ceasefire remains important for the country’s stability.

Public reactions have also reflected deep divisions over the issue. In areas of southern Beirut where Hezbollah has significant influence, graffiti and social media messages criticized the government’s decision to pursue negotiations. Some citizens expressed concern that talks with Israel could lead to concessions after years of conflict and sacrifice.

Despite the criticism, Aoun reaffirmed his commitment to diplomacy, stating that negotiations offer the best chance to protect the country’s future. He declared that Lebanon must choose a path that ends the war and restores stability, concluding, “I have chosen negotiations, and I am full of hope that we will be able to save Lebanon.”
