Algeria tech summit aims to bridge Africa’s digital gap
The ICT Africa Summit, a pan-African meeting focused on turning the continent into a tech hub, opened in Algiers on April 21st, according to Algerian government-friendly AL24 News. Under the theme “Unlocking Digital Horizons,” the event runs at the Palais des Expositions (SAFEX) until April 23rd.
The program includes everything from business-to-business (B2B) meetings and start-up competitions to an international exhibition where private firms and research centres will be displaying and demonstrating new tech solutions. Investors, entrepreneurs, and researchers have gathered in the Algerian capital to look at four main areas: healthcare modernisation, digital government services, smart transport, and energy digitalisation.
The heavy involvement of a vast array of ministries shows the large scale of the state’s current digital strategy. Participating bodies include the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications, and the Ministry of Knowledge Economy, Start-ups and Micro-enterprises. These are joined by the Ministry of Higher Education, the Ministry of Industry, the Ministry of Health, and the Ministry of Vocational Training and Education, which are working to coordinate the upcoming opening of Africa’s largest R&D hub. This massive facility is designed to host over 500 tech companies and research laboratories focused on energy, agriculture, and telecommunications.
This infrastructure development follows a significant period of economic expansion for the North African country. During the recent Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF), Algeria secured contracts worth $11.4 billion, signalling its rising status as a regional trade hub. To support this growth, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune recently announced a continent-wide start-up fund which is aimed at empowering young innovators across Africa. Strategic issues are also on the table at the summit, specifically cybersecurity, fintech, and digital sovereignty. Organisers are hoping to top the 2025 numbers, which brought in 15,000 visitors and 150 exhibitors, making it a central spot for tech cooperation in Africa.
