Poland names Algeria its primary African partner and aims to strengthen ties
Poland’s Minister of Foreign Affairs designated Algeria as its most important partner on the African continent during a diplomatic mission in Algiers on April 29th, according to government-friendly AL24 News. After meeting with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Radoslaw Sikorski spoke at length regarding his firm intention to “strengthen relations between Poland and Algeria” while advancing mutual national interests.
The bilateral relationship is rooted in the realities of geography and global energy security. Sikorski pointed to Algeria’s territorial footprint and its role as a premier energy producer as non-negotiable factors for Poland’s interests in the region. Recent economic data also shows that Algeria is now Poland’s leading economic partner in North Africa: by the close of 2025, bilateral trade had already climbed to the 1 billion mark USD, while Algerian exports to Poland grew by 100%, now totaling roughly 300 million USD.
Radoslaw Sikorski’s delegation included the Deputy Minister of State Assets along with leadership from Polish industrial giants like Orlen and Azoty. Their goal is simple: secure a deeper foothold for Polish investment in Algerian renewables, agriculture, and traditional energy.
The two nations also inked a deal between the Polish Diplomatic Academy and Algeria’s Institute of Diplomacy and International Relations (IDRI), which is intended to facilitate the exchange of expertise.
The discussions eventually turned toward global security, covering the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East alongside a focus on international law. Poland’s Minister of Foreign Affairs was particularly vocal regarding the Sahel, where he highlighted the threats of political instability, terrorism, irregular migration, and the influence of foreign mercenaries. Reaffirming Poland’s solidarity with Algeria in confronting these regional challenges, the Minister concluded by noting that both nations are effectively “rediscovering each other”. He expressed high expectations for the future, looking forward to what can be achieved through continued cooperation.
