Egypt carried out live-fire military exercises near its border with Israel this week, according to Africanews via agencies on May 1, as regional tensions continue to rise in the Middle East.

The drills, known as the “Badr 2026 tactical manoeuvres,” took place in the Sinai Peninsula and involved a wide range of military units, including ground forces, special operations troops, fighter jets and tanks. The exercises were designed to simulate real combat scenarios and test coordination between different branches of the armed forces.

Egypt’s Defence Minister, Ashraf Salem Zaher, supervised the main phase of the operation. He stated that such drills are part of ongoing efforts to maintain a high level of combat readiness and operational efficiency within the military. According to him, these exercises are essential in responding to evolving regional challenges and ensuring that Egypt remains prepared to defend its territory in all directions.

Ashraf Salem Zaher also suggested that the manoeuvres serve as a message of reassurance, demonstrating the army’s constant state of readiness. This comes at a time when instability in the region has heightened concerns about security and potential escalation.

Despite the scale and proximity of the exercises to the Israeli border, they were conducted in coordination with Israel under the framework of the 1979 Egypt-Israel peace treaty. The agreement imposes strict limits on military deployments in the Sinai Peninsula, dividing the area into zones with controlled levels of armed presence.

However, some Israeli media outlets have interpreted the drills with suspicion, suggesting they could signal broader strategic intentions by Egypt. These concerns highlight the fragile nature of relations between the two countries, often described as a “cold peace” despite decades of formal diplomatic ties.

Overall, the exercises reflect both Egypt’s focus on military preparedness and the continued sensitivity surrounding security developments in the region.
