Global press freedom has reached an all-time low, with over half of all nations now ranked as “difficult” or “very serious,” reports Maghrebi Week on May 11th.

While Morocco (105th) now leads the Maghreb region, Reporters Without Borders still noted its attempts to silence dissent. Tunisia (137th) and Algeria (145th) continue to dismantle media independence through restrictive decrees and bans on foreign funding. Meanwhile, Libya (138th) remains an “informational black hole” where journalists are targeted by unaccountable armed groups.
