Gérald Darmanin, France’s Justice Minister, arrived in Algiers for an official visit in the hopes of boosting cooperation and negotiating the release of a detained French journalist, France 24 reports on May 19th.

More broadly, Darmanin also wishes to expand bilateral judicial cooperation during his visit.

The trip could indicate an improvement in relations between Paris and Algiers, whose ties sharply deteriorated following France’s 2024 decision to back Moroccan sovereignty over the disputed Western Sahara region.
