Sahrawi Republic president denounces bias for Morocco
Sahrawi President Brahim Ghali denounced the UN’s “bias” for Morocco in a letter to Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, reports Maghrebi Week on 18th May.
He insisted on the need to respect the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination and independence, as an increasing number of countries have expressed their support for Morocco’s autonomy plan.
Under the controversial plans, the contested region would have a regional leader and parliament but would remain under Moroccan sovereignty. The UN’s Security Council passed Resolution 2797 in October 2025, recognizing the plans as “most feasible” and thus making the perspective of an independent Sahrawi Republic increasingly unlikely.
