Libya demands a seat in talks over its political future
Libya’s acting Foreign Minister Taher Al-Baour demanded formal Libyan participation in consultations concerning the country’s political future after Egypt, Algeria and Tunisia met UN envoy Hanna Tetteh in Cairo on May 21st, as reported by Libya Gazette on May 25th.
The meeting of Libya’s three neighbouring states focused on political and security developments and the UN backed electoral process, Al-Baour responded that Libya’s Foreign Ministry and official institutions must be represented in any talks dealing with Libyan affairs.
His statement reflects Tripoli’s concern that international actors continue to support a Libyan led process while discussing the country’s future outside Libya and without its government directly involved.
