Algeria launches new national AI plan and digital services portal
On 25 May, Algerian Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb chaired a government meeting to review a new national artificial intelligence (AI) strategy and the rollout of “Dzair Digital Services,” a centralised public services portal, according to a report by the domestic news platform Algérie Éco.
The gathering demonstrates the government’s will to shift the country’s national development model toward an economy based on knowledge and innovation.
The national AI blueprint, initiated under the impetus of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, focuses on modernising public action and accelerating digital transformation across the country. According to the official communiqué released by the Prime Minister’s office, this new technological framework is designed to help the country master emerging technologies and move away from its reliance on hydrocarbons.
Administrators revealed that the upcoming national AI strategy relies on three main pillars: secure data architectures, robust digital infrastructure, and the cultivation of localised human talent. The Algerian government underlined that these three components will serve as the baseline for long-term domestic AI capability.
Once the blueprint receives its final legislative adoption by the Council of Ministers, the state plans to roll out operational action plans, according to Algérie Éco. These targeted action plans will dictate the exact deployment pace across high-priority socio-economic sectors.
In parallel with the AI framework, the cabinet reviewed the implementation timeline for the “Dzair Digital Services” portal. Designed as a cornerstone of public sector modernisation, the platform aims to bridge the gap between citizens and state bureaucracies. During the session, the government emphasised the importance of expanding both the web and mobile versions of the portal. By digitising routine administrative tasks, the government intends to reduce physical travel for citizens, simplify bureaucratic procedures, and enhance transparency across state ministries.
This administrative policy update comes just one month after Algiers hosted the major ICT Africa Summit on April 21st, a continent-wide tech event previously covered by Maghrebi.org.
