Libyan authorities target illegal migration infrastructure

Libyan authorities dismantled a clandestine boat building facility in Tajoura, east of Tripoli, which was being used to prepare vessels for migrant smuggling across the Mediterranean. The raid follows reports that Libyan authorities are also intensifying expulsions, transfers and controls involving irregular migrants, as reported by The Libya Observer, Agenzia Nova and agencies on May 26th.

The Tajoura operation was carried out by the Investigation and Information Gathering Department of Tripoli’s Anti Illegal Immigration Agency acting on intelligence identifying the site as one of the main hubs for manufacturing and equipping boats intended for illegal crossings over the Mediterranean.

Security forces coordinated with the Anti Illegal Immigration Prosecution Office before raiding the facility, leading to the arrest of several workers and seizing machinery together with raw materials used in boat construction.

The suspects were placed in pretrial detention while prosecutors ordered the cautionary custody of the equipment and the closure of the site.

The operation marks a shift from intercepting migrants after departure to targeting the physical supply chain that makes maritime crossings possible as Tajoura’s position on the eastern edge of Tripoli also places the case inside western Libya’s main coastal departure environment where boats, transport networks and smugglers can connect directly to Mediterranean routes.

On May 24th Libyan authorities were increasing expulsion and transfer operations involving migrants across Tripolitania and eastern Libya reflecting a broader attempt to show stronger control over migration routes and internal movements.

But the policy remains particularly sensitive as stronger controls may disrupt smuggling networks while migrants inside Libya continue to face vulnerability to detention and removal without clear protection guarantees.

The two developments therefore show Libya tightening the migration file on both sides of the route against the infrastructure used for departures and against the migrants already present on its territory in compliance with the European political pressure.
