Belarus aims to position Algeria as its strategic ‘gateway’ to Africa
Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko has formally expressed his desire for Algeria to serve as the primary “gateway” country for Belarusian economic and industrial cooperation across the African continent. According to a May 26th report by exiled Belarusian media outlet reform.news, Lukashenko made the pitch during an official meeting in Minsk with Ibrahim Boughali, the Speaker of Algeria’s National People’s Assembly.
During the diplomatic session, Lukashenko emphasised that Belarus is entirely open to the North African nation. He stated his ambition to build advanced and serious relations with Algiers. He believes this could become their strongest partnership on the continent. The Belarusian president noted that Minsk already relies on specific regional hubs in Central and Southern Africa. However, establishing a firm anchor in North Africa via Algeria remains a critical foreign policy goal.
The meeting built upon momentum from Lukashenko’s official state visit to Algiers in December 2025. During that trip, he held extensive talks with Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. Reflecting on those negotiations, Lukashenko reiterated that the economic structures of both nations fit together well. He asserted that Belarus is ready to supply industrial assets and agricultural technologies. These tools will complement Algeria’s current developmental needs. In turn, Algiers can fulfill vital Belarusian market demands.
A concrete cooperation plan is already in place between the two governments. This plan focuses heavily on what Lukashenko described as flagship, meaningful projects. The Belarusian leader urged the visiting Algerian parliamentarians to actively support these initiatives. He opened the doors for Algerian delegations to inspect Belarusian industrial and agricultural facilities. He hopes this will lead to future joint manufacturing ventures.
Speaker Boughali reciprocated the diplomatic goodwill and conveyed personal greetings from President Tebboune. He affirmed that Lukashenko’s recent visit generated significant public attention in Algeria. It also signaled a mutual interest in boosting trade turnover. Boughali explicitly confirmed that Algiers wants to leverage Belarusian technical expertise. They are targeting three core sectors: advanced agriculture, heavy industry, and pharmaceuticals.
