Morocco pioneering industrialisation in Africa
In the continent, Morocco has overpowered South Africa in industrial growth, according to Atalayar on 28th May. Lately, Morocco has the quickest rate of industrial development in the region, between 2010 and 2024.
The Moroccan economy is currently prospering and advancing. In the data in 2024, it shows that Morocco is the leading African country in economic development. This was followed by: South Africa, Egypt, Tunisia, Mauritius, Algeria, Eswatini, Senegal, Namibia and Ivory Coast.
Out of 52 African countries, 41 have reported a stronger and healthier economic growth. This was stated by the African Development Bank’s report. Although, these statistics highlight a host of other problems.
One main issue is the nature of materials used. Numerous nations rely on their own non-renewable materials, but use oversea industries to process them. This shows significant gaps in the trade, as the countries use up limited resources and depend on other regions for trade. However a stronger developed industry individually, would benefit each country on their own.
Morocco is a prime example of positive industrial growth. A factor that has strengthened the economy is focusing on sectors that increase the wealth of the country. This is seen as the economy has concentrated on the automotive and aeronautical industries. Additionally, Morocco funded more into the energy sector, by providing more: wind, hydroelectric and green energy. This has strengthened the economy, whilst being more environmentally friendly.
On the other hand, the region plans to be greener and more sustainable. The Moroccan government hopes for its electricity power to be 52% generated from renewable energy, by 2030. This initiative is supported by the African Development Bank’s report, whilst it advocates for other countries to be more environmentally friendly.
Various sectors have improved from Morocco’s financial growth. Industries such as construction and transport have enhanced. This in preparation for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, to make it more accessible for football fans. Strikingly, this is seen with the Hassan II Stadium in Casablanca, which will be a prime sport destination. Alongside this, Morocco is co-hosting with Spain and Portugal.
Morocco is a significant role model of industrial growth. Other countries in the continent, are following the financial patterns in North Africa. Impressively, Morocco was granted €1.3 billion to boost other sectors like airports and local authorities. This helps secure a stronger future for Moroccans.
