Algeria bars former Hirak activists from upcoming elections

Algeria’s independent election authority has barred multiple former 2019 Hirak protest leaders from contesting the upcoming July 2nd parliamentary elections, according to a May 30th report by The New Arab.

High-profile rejections include prominent Batna lawyer Hashem Sassi, who was set to head the list for the pro-government National Democratic Rally (RND). Well-known activist Samir Belarbi was also blocked from running under the Justice and Development Front banner.

Authorities disqualified candidates using Article 200 of the electoral law, citing vague “suspicious activities”.
