Algeria reaffirms partnership with South Korea
Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf stated Algeria’s strong commitment to its strategic partnership with South Korea at a ministerial meeting in Seoul, according to a report released by the Algerian embassy in France on the 4th of June. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the bilateral relationship between the two nations. Attaf described the link between Algiers and Seoul as a key driver for broader Africa-South Korea cooperation. He highlighted projects with a continental impact. This includes the creation of an African Centre for Information and Advanced Communication Technologies.
The minister evaluated the progress of the partnership since the 2024 summit. He summarised Algeria‘s view with two words: satisfaction and ambition. He praised what the Algerian embassy has described as visible progress made on past commitments. He also shared an ambition to secure more gains for both African and Korean interests. Attaf focused his address on three main areas.
First, he noted how closely the Africa-Korea goals align with Africa’s Agenda 2063, which serves as Africa’s blueprint for achieving sustainable development over a fifty-year period. He welcomed South Korea’s support for local ownership of these cooperation activities.
Second, Attaf praised the practical approach of the partnership. This includes active projects in vital fields like trade, infrastructure, agriculture, and digitisation.
Third, he stated his ambition for Africa to join global economic shifts. These shifts include artificial intelligence, robotics, nanotechnology, and renewable energy. The minister stressed that the top priority is to keep Africa from being left behind during these tech revolutions. He expressed that colonial history had unfairly kept the continent out of past industrial and information shifts. This comes just a few months after Algiers hosted the ICT Africa Summit on April 21st. This continent-wide event was previously covered by Maghrebi.org and focused on turning the continent into a tech hub
