Algerian PM visits Chad to discuss power plant project
Algeria’s Prime Minister, Sifi Ghrieb, arrived in Chad on June 8th to meet with his counterpart, Allamaye Halina. According to the government-friendly Algerie-Eco, this meeting takes place in the context of the implementation of a new power plant in Chad, partially financed by Algeria.
This visit will be the occasion of laying down a symbolic first stone of this electric power plant, as a sign of Algerian and Chadian solidarity and renewed cooperation.
With a production capacity of 40 Megawatts, this electric power plant will be built by Sonelgaz International, as a donation from the Algerian government to the Republic of Chad.
This project takes place within a broader initiative of Algerian President Abdelmajid Tebboune to reaffirm solidarity and durable investments in African countries.
During his visit to Chad, Ghrieb has been accompanied by the Minister of Hydrocarbons, Mohamed Arkab, the Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies, Mourad Adjal, and the director of the Algerian international cooperation of solidarity and development, Abed Hallouz.
After the official arrival ceremony, both prime ministers held a private meeting reviewing the project and other development cooperation between Chad and Algeria.
Ghrieb will also have a consultation with the president of Chad, Marechal Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, discussing the reinforcement of the Algerian and Chadian partnership.
Both countries have declared their desire to strengthen socio-economic cooperation and enhance bilateral relations.
On June 3rd, Ghrieb inaugurated another power plant in Niger, financed as a donation from Algeria. The electric power plant has a similar 40 MW capacity and is located in Niamey, the Nigerien capital.
This infrastructure has also been built by Sonelgaz International under the supervision of the Algerian state.
Sonelgaz International was launched in 2026 by the Ministry of Energy and Renewable Energies to bolster and consolidate Algeria’s place in regional and international energy markets, particularly in Africa.
