Israeli military intercepts drone near Lebanon border

Amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, the Israeli military says it intercepted a drone near the Lebanese border, according to the Middle East Eye and agencies on June 12th.

According to a military statement, Israel’s Air Force identified and intercepted a drone in the northern town of Metula, situated near the Lebanese border, following sirens warning of a hostile aircraft.

The drone entered an area where Israeli forces were operating in southern Lebanon; missile and rocket warning sirens were triggered during interception attempts.

Metula is near southern Lebanon, where Israel has continued military operations and incursions despite the April ceasefire.

On June 7th, Iran fired missiles at Israel for the first time since the US-Israeli war on Iran reached a temporary truce in April.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) confirmed that strikes against northern Israel were in response to Israel’s bombardment of Lebanon; Israel successfully intercepted these strikes.

These strikes come amid concerns about Israel’s defence capabilities, including an apparent missile interception failure in southern Israel in March.

Despite denying experiencing missile interceptor shortages, in April, Israel reportedly turned to air defence systems not originally designed for missile interception, like David’s Sling.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to reduce Israel’s reliance on foreign, particularly US, defence aid to allow for a stronger domestic defence industry.

The US is Israel’s largest arms supplier, accounting for 53% of Israel’s total conventional arms imports since 2023; Germany covers the remaining 47%.

European nations, including Britain, France, Denmark, the Czech Republic and Serbia, have also exported arms to Israel, despite concerns about complicity in war crimes amid Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza, war on Iran and war on Lebanon.

Furthermore, Thailand and Morocco have developed defence ties with Israel; Thailand used Israeli-made arms during border clashes with Cambodia in late 2025.

Additionally, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi discussed defence cooperation during a state visit to Israel in February.

It is currently unclear if the June 12th drone interception will lead to retaliation from Lebanon or Israel; however, escalating Middle Eastern tensions have led Lebanon to strengthen military cooperation with Pakistan.

Pakistan has rejected the Abraham Accords, under which Arab nations, like Morocco and the UAE, have normalised Israeli ties since 2020.

Maghrebi contacted Israel’s Ministry of Defence for comment on missile interception efforts, but has not received a response at the time of publication.
