Mauritanian Ministry of Health introducing medicine regulations

On June 8th, Mauritania revealed its new innovations to the medical sector. According to the North Africa Post (Moroccan government friendly) on June 9th, there will be tighter restrictions on pharmaceutical distribution and price control.

All medicines are obliged to undergo stricter measures, monitoring and registration actions. This will strengthen Mauritania to ensure safer medication and controlled costs. Notably, Thiam Tidjani (Health Minister) advocates for the upcoming constraints, as it will protect the health of Mauritanians. Alongside this scheme, the Autonomous Port of Nouakchott and Oum Tounsi International Airport, have reinforced stricter precautions over treatment supply chains and imports. 

Reportedly, the minister declared that pharmaceutical prices will be heavily governed and has advised the public to report any breaches of the new law.

An upcoming app is arriving in two months and will improve the health sector, in its entirety. The digital platform provides tracking and monitoring features, to check medicines. Lately, Mauritania has 44 authorised pharmaceutical suppliers in the country.

Additionally, the health sector is undergoing swift development. Tidjani has said the transformations will strengthen: the emergency and maternity areas. There are plans to improve kidney treatment and the quality of medical services throughout.

One of health challenges in Mauritania, is the frequent referrals made to other medical centres. Due to a lack of expert medical equipment, many patients are transferred to facilities in Nouakchott, which prolongs needed medical attention. Therefore this will benefit patient transfers, as it will provide easier; efficient facilities. Positively, the government has adapted a new medical evacuation system, based on feedback from the health services. This shows strong adaptations being made.

Recently, support given by the European Union has strengthened Mauritian medical systems. These have ranged from training and access to more medicine supplies. One main goal is shared from the partnership and that is to build responsive and reliable healthcare facilities. Through hard work and partnership, this will create a positive future for Mauritania.
