Cooperation and counter-terrorism: can Maghreb countries do it?

Moroccan minister Nasser Bourita called for Africa to become a global counter-terrorism hub. The ambition might be clear, but the regional consensus backing it shows signs of strain. 

According to Maghrebi Week on the 15th of June, the state of cooperation in the Maghreb to counter terrorism from the Sahel is weak. The real issue lies in the conflictual nature of Morocco and Algeria’s relationship, which has led to an inability to establish a regional dialogue. 

As Algeria hosts the Polisario Front, a group considered a terrorist organisation by Morocco and that fights for the independence of Western Sahara, regional agreements are halted.
