Around 10 Gaza flotilla activists have been held in Benghazi since May 24th after being stopped near Syrte while travelling through eastern Libya, as reported by Maghrebi Week on June 15th.

The group, linked to the Global Sumud Flotilla, included activists from several countries, among them two Italians, and had attempted to move along Libya’s eastern coastline after efforts to reach Rafah were blocked.

Their detention has drawn criticism from international institutions and pressure from Italian authorities, who have sought access and the return of their nationals, the case is exposing the security practices of the Haftar-controlled east, where foreign activists, Gaza solidarity networks and travel through sensitive military zones can quickly be treated as threats.
