Israel and Hezbollah agree ceasefire after escalations in Lebanon

Israel and Hezbollah agreed to a ceasefire on June 19th after a sharp escalation in fighting raised fears of a wider regional conflict and threatened to undermine a newly signed US-Iran peace agreement, reports Middle East Eye and agencies on June 19th.

The truce, which took effect at 4pm local time, was reached following intensive diplomatic efforts involving Washington and Tehran. A source familiar with Hezbollah said the agreement depended on Israel adhering to the ceasefire, while Israeli officials said it would hold only if Hezbollah halted attacks.

The agreement came after one of the deadliest days of violence in Lebanon since the United States and Iran announced a deal earlier this week aimed at reducing tensions across the region.

Fighting intensified on the night of June 18th when Hezbollah fighters launched attacks on Israeli forces advancing near Ali al-Taher, a strategically important position overlooking parts of southern Lebanon. Israel said four soldiers, including a battalion commander, were killed and several others injured during the clashes.

In response, the Israeli military carried out more than 80 air strikes across southern and eastern Lebanon. According to Lebanon’s health ministry, at least 47 people were killed and 39 wounded. Authorities warned the toll could rise as rescue operations continued amid ongoing bombardment.

The violence also triggered a new wave of displacement. Lebanese media reported that residents fled towns in the Tyre and Bint Jbeil districts, with many having only recently returned following the US-Iran agreement announced earlier this week.

Hezbollah sources claimed Israel’s extensive strikes went beyond retaliation for the deaths of its soldiers and were intended to undermine the emerging US-Iran diplomatic framework. The group argues Israel is seeking greater control over territory in southern Lebanon, particularly around the Ali al-Taher position, which overlooks large sections of the Nabatieh region.

Israeli officials have openly emphasized the importance of holding territory in southern Lebanon. Defence Minister Israel Katz said military objectives include maintaining control of occupied areas, while Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledged that Israeli forces would remain in the security zone for as long as necessary.

Despite the ceasefire, major disagreements remain unresolved. Israel insists on maintaining a security presence in southern Lebanon, while Hezbollah continues to demand a complete Israeli withdrawal. As a result, the latest truce is likely to face significant challenges in the weeks ahead.
