Air Algérie launches direct route to Angola
Air Algérie officially launched its first direct flight between Algiers and Luanda, the capital of Angola, on Friday, 26 June 2026. The company released an official statement confirming the launch, explaining that the move is an attempt to transform Algiers into a primary transport hub for the region. According to an article by Algérie Eco, the decision builds on specific agreements reached during the recent state visit by the President of Angola to Algeria.
The airline confirmed that this link is a key part of its plan to integrate deeper into the African continent. By establishing a direct path to Luanda, Air Algérie aims to boost trade. It also wants to promote easier travel for business leaders and regular passengers. The company identified the route as a strategic move, targeting African markets that show high potential for growth. Management noted that the new connection provides more flexible and reliable travel choices, effectively closing a logistical gap for those moving between North Africa and Southern Africa. By positioning Algiers as a gateway to Africa, the airline intends to facilitate closer cooperation with Angola in many economic sectors. The addition of this route is a practical upgrade to the group’s network.
This launch follows the 16 June inauguration of the Algiers–Libreville route, via Douala, signalling a rapid acceleration in Algeria’s regional strategy. Both lines are not isolated commercial efforts but represent the execution of an aerial development plan. By linking disparate points, which include, Gabon, Cameroon, and now Angola, the state is building a network designed to place Algiers as the central transit point for continental movement. The push also complements the ongoing Trans-Saharan highway project, which aims to link Algiers to Lagos. Together, these infrastructure ventures demonstrate a clear, synchronised ambition: to cement Algeria’s role as a gateway connecting the Maghreb, the Sahel, and Southern Africa.
