Algeria inaugurates renewed flight path to Russia

Algeria will be reestablishing its flights to Russia on the 3rd of August, between Algiers and Moscow. According to government-friendly Observ’Algerie on the 30th of June, the Russian federal agency of air transport, Rosaviatsia, has approved the opening of the flight path. 

Three flights a day will take place from Algiers’ airport, going directly to Cheremetievo in Moscow. This decision took place after a meeting between the director of Rosaviatsia, Dmitri Yadrov, and the Algerian ambassador in Russia, Toufik Djouama. It has been agreed that Air Algerie will operate three flights a week. 

Conversations during the meeting reportedly embraced and saluted Algeria’s contribution to keeping a bilateral relationship with Russia, particularly in a context of international pressure.

Discussions on this topic have been going on for a few months, with Dmitri Yadrov announcing in April 2026 that the Rosaviatsia led negotiations with the Algerian air agency. 

Rosaviatsia had officialised the launch of new regular air routes with Algeria. The first official flight is set to take place on the 3rd of August. 

The Russian federal agency has been actively trying to reestablish different flight paths and relations more generally since 2023. They have successfully established flight paths with South Africa, Vietnam, Saudi Arabia and Mongolia. The new agreement with Algiers shows a diversification of international flights and destinations for Russian passengers, vastly limited since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. 

This new flight path further shows Air Algérie’s recent ambitions of expansion and diversification of destinations. Air Algérie officially launched its first direct flight between Algiers and Luanda, the capital of Angola, on the 26th of June, and recently inaugurated a new flight to Libreville, Gabon. 

By positioning Algiers as a gateway to Africa, the airline intends to facilitate closer cooperation in many economic sectors. The addition of international and regional routes enhances different economic and political goals for Algiers.
