Insurgents attack military positions across Mali

Coordinated attacks by armed groups targeted military positions across northern and central Mali, with the Malian army saying it repelled assaults in several towns while security operations remained ongoing, according to Reuters on July 4.

The attacks were reported in at least seven locations, including Niono, Molodo, Sandaré, Nioro du Sahel, Diboli, Gogui and Kayes. The Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) said troops responded quickly and regained control of the affected military bases.

The al Qaeda-linked group Jama’a Nusrat ul-Islam wa al-Muslimin (JNIM) claimed responsibility for the attacks, saying its fighters had targeted military installations across western and central Mali. The Azawad Liberation Front (FLA), a coalition of predominantly Tuareg armed groups, also claimed operations against government forces in the north.

Mali’s military government said its forces had inflicted heavy losses on the attackers and recovered weapons and equipment during the fighting. Authorities urged residents to remain calm and rely on official sources for information as operations continued.

The attacks underline the continuing security challenges facing Mali despite years of military operations against armed groups. Since taking power, the country’s military leadership has intensified counterinsurgency efforts while reducing cooperation with Western partners and strengthening security ties with Russia.

Violence linked to armed groups remains widespread across Mali and has spread into neighbouring Burkina Faso and Niger, contributing to one of the world’s fastest-growing humanitarian and displacement crises. Thousands of civilians have been killed or forced to flee their homes as insecurity continues across the Sahel.

Security analysts say coordinated attacks on military positions demonstrate the ability of armed groups to launch operations across multiple regions despite increased military pressure. The latest violence is expected to place further strain on efforts to restore stability and expand government authority in affected areas.

The Malian government has not announced the number of casualties, and military operations were continuing as authorities assessed the situation. The attacks are likely to raise fresh concerns about security in the Sahel as regional governments continue efforts to combat insurgent groups operating across national borders.
