Egypt backs renewed US role in Libya

Egypt and the United States have renewed calls for a Libyan led political settlement after Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty discussed Libya with US adviser Massad Boulos, as reported by Libya Gazette on July 6th.

Washington is increasing engagement with both sides of Libya’s divide, recent talks with Tripoli officials have focused on military training, border security and counterterrorism, while Secretary of State Marco Rubio has also met Saddam Haftar.

Egypt’s support could help Washington build regional backing for a new initiative, particularly given Cairo’s influence in eastern Libya.
