Tripoli seeks deeper defence ties with USA

Libya’s government is seeking deeper military and security cooperation with the United States as part of efforts to unify the country’s divided armed forces, as reported by Maghrebi Week on July 6th.

Abdul Salam Al Zoubi met Massad Boulos and AFRICOM deputy commander John Brennan in Washington on June 25th to discuss training, capacity building, counterterrorism and border security.

The talks come as Libya’s southern frontiers remain exposed to smuggling, irregular migration and armed networks linking the country to Chad, Niger and Sudan, for Washington the cooperation with Libyan institutions offers a way to address regional security risks while maintaining influence in a space where Russia, Turkey, Egypt and European governments are also active.
