Spread of Ebola in Congo with 600 dead
The Congo’s latest wave of Ebola has killed 600 people and spread across the country according to AP News on July 9th.
On July 8th, a report by the Congolese government stated Ebpola has been suspected in two cases in Kisangani, the Tshopo province. One of the case has been described as having no apparent geographical connection to known outbreaks.”
The other suspected case is believed to be connected to the Ituri province. The Nia-Nia health zone located in the Ituri province is where the first cases of Ebola were reported.
As cases have not previously been recorded in Kisangani, it demonstrates the spread of this wave of Ebola. The current Ebola outbreak was declared on May 15th 2026 by the Congolese government. According to the World Health Organisation, Ebola has been spreading throughout the Congo for weeks before the official declaration.
Currently no vaccine or treatment exists for the cause of the current Ebola outbreak – the Bundibugyo virus. Clinical trials recently began to discover a treatment after the release of a research study aiming to eradicate the virus. The lack of treatment and the struggle to contain the spread of Ebola stems from funding issues and the current fighting in the epicenter of the outbreak, eastern Congo.
