Malian troops regain strategic town after rebel withdrawal

Mali’s military (FAMA) said it had regained control of the strategic northern town of Anéfis after Tuareg-led separatist fighters withdrew following days of intense clashes, according to Reuters on July 10th.

FAMA said reinforcements reached Anéfis from Gao after coordinated air and ground operations pushed back fighters from the Tuareg-led Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) and allied armed groups.

Authorities said several rebel vehicles were destroyed during the operation, although casualty figures could not be independently verified.

FLA rebels confirmed their withdrawal from the town, saying the move was intended to allow their forces to reorganise after heavy fighting.

The group also alleged that troops from neighbouring Niger and Burkina Faso fought alongside FAMA, which is supported by the Russian Africa Corps.

Anéfis is located between the rebel-held town of Kidal and the government-controlled city of Gao, making it one of northern Mali’s most strategically important military positions.

The latest clashes followed coordinated attacks launched by separatist and jihadist groups across several northern and central towns on July 4th.

Renewed fighting highlights the fragile security situation in northern Mali despite continued military operations against militants from the FLA and the al-Qaeda-affiliated JNIM.

Authorities have increasingly relied on regional allies and Russian support as they seek to restore state control and contain insurgent activity across the Sahel.

Regional observers say control of Anéfis remains critical to military operations in northern Mali because of its location on key supply routes linking Gao and Kidal. The area has witnessed repeated confrontations between government forces and armed groups in recent years.

Although the military says it has secured the town, analysts warn that armed groups remain active across northern Mali and could launch further attacks as violence continues to threaten stability in the wider Sahel region.

The latest operation underscores the continuing security challenges facing Mali, where government forces remain engaged in efforts to restore stability, protect civilians and strengthen control over territories affected by persistent insurgent violence.
