US presidential adviser Massad Boulos met political, military and community leaders in Misrata as opposition to Washington’s proposed plan to reunify Libya’s rival political factions continued to grow, according to the Libya Gazette and Maghrebi Week on July 13.

Protesters and Misrata’s Military Council rejected the initiative, arguing it could prolong Libya’s transitional period and opposing any political settlement involving Khalifa Haftar or his sons without a constitutional framework and elections.

The visit forms part of wider US efforts to bridge Libya’s political divisions, with further talks expected in Tripoli as Washington continues to push for a Libyan-led agreement and a roadmap towards national elections.
