Algeria and Mali restore diplomatic ties

Algeria and Mali have agreed to restore diplomatic relations, reopening their airspace and reinstating ambassadors more than a year after a diplomatic dispute strained ties between the neighbouring countries, according to Reuters published on July 10.

The breakthrough follows months of tensions that began in April 2025 after Algeria shot down a Malian military drone near the shared border, accusing Bamako of violating its airspace. Relations between the two neighbours deteriorated after Mali accused Algeria of supporting separatist groups operating in northern Mali, an allegation Algiers repeatedly denied. Regional analysts say the restoration of diplomatic ties could improve cooperation on border security, counterterrorism and trade at a time when armed groups continue to operate across the Sahel.
