Libyan security forces dismantle Somali kidnapping group

Libyan security authorities have dismantled a criminal gang composed of Somali nationals accused of kidnapping, torturing, and extorting fellow Somali migrants in Tripoli, as reported by Libya Review on July 19th. 

According to the Security Directorates Support Agency in Tajoura, east of Tripoli, the operation started after authorities received intelligence indicating that a group of Somali nationals had created a criminal network to abduct migrants from their communities and hold them captive in inhumane conditions.

Reportedly, the gang subjected victims to severe physical torture, recorded the abuse, and sent the footage to relatives abroad to force them to pay large ransom sums in exchange for the victims’ release.

Officials described the situation as a well-organised extortion operation that targets migrants who have very limited means of protection. 

Following surveillance and intelligence-gathering efforts, the agency had a unit raid the gang’s hideout, leading to the arrest of one Somali suspect and two hostages being rescued who reportedly faced serious physical abuse.

The victims received emergency medical treatment before being transported to the hospital for further care. 

Several other gang members were able to flee during the raid and attempted to escape through Libya’s coastal cities, allegedly with the intent of using irregular migration routes to leave Libya, security officials stated.

A second key suspect was arrested by investigators, who is believed to have played a direct role in the kidnappings and acts of torture.

The original suspect has been referred to the Public Prosecution, while other fugitives are being pursued by the authorities.

The Security Directorates Support Agency has released photographs of the wanted suspects through its official platform and urged members of the public to provide it with any information that may assist in the arrests. 

Kidnapping and extortion targeted at migrants have remained a persistent issue in Libya, which continues to serve as a major transit country for migrants aiming to reach Europe.

Human trafficking and migrant smuggling networks have long exploited migrants who are in a vulnerable position through abduction, forced labour, ransom demands, and violence. 

Authorities said the operation forms part of a larger campaign to dismantle organised criminal networks involved in kidnapping, migrant smuggling, and human trafficking. 

Officials stated that they are committed to pursuing the arrests of all involved while strengthening efforts to combat organised crime in Libya.
