UK rebuilds its footprint in Libya through economic diplomacy

The United Kingdom is quietly rebuilding its presence in Libya, placing economic diplomacy at the centre of its engagement while maintaining support for the UN-led political process.

According to the Libya Gazette, talks were held on 17th July between Libya’s Minister of Economy and Trade, Suhail Abu Shiha, and British Ambassador Martin Longden to illustrate London’s renewed interest in expanding commercial ties after years of limited involvement.

The meeting focused on encouraging the return of major British companies to the Libyan market.
