The U.S. federal government has announced the opening of a secondary Federal Bureau of Investigation Legal Attaché office within its embassy in Algiers, according to Le Matin d’Algerie on July 21st.

Analysts claim that this means the U.S. and Algeria are establishing a permanent, direct link to work together more closely on security and law enforcement.

The announcement was made on July 20, by the U.S. Embassy in Algeria on X. In its message, the U.S. diplomatic representation emphasises that this establishment “marks a new step in strengthening cooperation between the United States and Algeria on shared policing priorities.” The embassy also affirms its desire to “consolidate a long-standing partnership,” address common challenges, and further deepen ties between the two countries through close cooperation with Algerian authorities.

This decision comes amid a context of gradual rapprochement between Algiers and Washington on regional security issues, according to Le Matin D’Algerie. Over recent years, civilian and military officials of both countries have increased their exchanges. This has materialised, according to the Algerian outlet, in an improvement in cooperation against terrorism, organised crime, illicit financing networks, and cybersecurity threats.

The opening of an FBI Legal Attaché office is first and foremost to serve a practical use. The stationed officials will serve as a liaison point between the FBI and the security services of partner states. They facilitate intelligence sharing, coordination of international investigations, training programs, as well as technical assistance in files with a cross-border dimension.

The initiative also fits into an approach aimed at strengthening partnerships with states deemed capable of playing a central role in regional security. For the United States, having a permanent FBI presence in Algiers makes it possible to shorten judicial and police cooperation circuits. According to Le Matin d’Algerie, it should also improve the flow of information and develop joint capabilities.
