Israel backs Saudi Arabia joining the Abraham Accords

Amid growing Middle Eastern tensions, Israel has expressed support for Saudi Arabia joining the US-brokered Abraham Accords, according to Middle East Eye and agencies on July 23rd.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office wrote on X: “The joint American and Israeli military action against the genocidal regime in Tehran and Israel’s crushing of Iran’s terror axis have created the possibility to expand the circle of peace.”
“As President [Donald Trump] has said, Saudi Arabia’s joining of the Abraham Accords would be an historic leap forward for peace in the Middle East.”
Since 2020, several Arab nations, including Morocco, Bahrain and the UAE, have officially normalised ties with Israel under the Abraham Accords.
Like Israel, Saudi Arabia has been engaged in a long-standing dispute with Yemen’s Iranian-backed Houthis.
Yemen has been under a land, sea and air blockade implemented by a Saudi-led coalition since 2015; this siege has killed hundreds of thousands and led to a deteriorating humanitarian situation.
Both Saudi Arabia and Israel are US allies that maintain extensive US military ties, including arms sales; Saudi Arabia is reportedly the largest purchaser of US arms.
In November 2025, the US confirmed the sale of F-35 fighter jets to Saudi Arabia, despite the US banning the sale of offensive weapons to Saudi Arabia in 2021; the ban was lifted in 2024.
However, these jets would lack advanced weapons systems and electronic warfare equipment due to Israeli concerns that the sale of this aircraft would undermine Israel’s regional air superiority.
On November 21st, it was reported that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had assured Netanyahu that the US was “committed to maintaining Israel’s qualitative edge in all areas, including Israel’s advantage regarding the supply of F-35 aircraft.”
US policy historically restricted the sale of F-35 jets in the Middle East to Israel; Morocco became the first Arab and African nation to acquire the state-of-the-art aircraft in June 2025.
Israel’s support for Saudi Arabia joining the Abraham Accords came despite relations between the countries being strained over Saudi Arabia’s refusal to recognise Israel unless Israel recognises a Palestinian state.
Furthermore, Saudi Arabia was among eight nations to condemn violence by Jewish settlers in the occupied Palestinian territories.
