Germany pledges security to Nigeria as Sahel instability spreads

Germany has pledged greater support for Nigeria’s security efforts and economic development as instability across the Sahel region continues to threaten neighbouring West African countries, according to Reuters reports published on July 22.

The announcement came during Nigerian President Bola Tinubu’s meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Berlin, where both leaders discussed strengthening cooperation on security, trade and investment. Germany also committed €10 million in humanitarian assistance to support people displaced by violence linked to armed groups operating across the Sahel.
