Algeria will not tolerate terrorism threats directed at Tunisia

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune stressed that Algeria will not tolerate any terrorist threat targeting Tunisia, stressing his country’s commitment to supporting the security and stability of its neighbour, as reported by Libya Eye on July 27th. 

Tebboune, in an excerpt published by the Algerian presidency of his regular meeting with the media broadcast, stated that Algeria will confront any threat targeting Tunisia, adding that “Algeria will not tolerate any terrorist threat targeting Tunisia, and whoever threatens Tunisia, will leave his parents’ tent.” 

While speaking about Algerian-French relations, Tebboune said “I reiterate, first to the Algerians and then to our French friends, that the Algerian president has never asked for a quota of visas or a certain number of visas and has not spoken about them.” He later stated “I have never asked for an apology, I have never asked for compensation, and Algeria will never extend its hand.” Relations between Algeria and France are seeing attempts to reset their course, after a period of tensions that affected a number of bilateral files, such as the visa file. 

French Ambassador to Algeria Stéphane Romate, said in an interview with the Algerian news website “TSA” that he returned to Algeria “with great happiness,” and that the French President Emmannuel Macron ordered him with the aim of putting relations between the countries back “on the right track.” Romate said he hoped for the number of visas issued to Algerian citizens to return to pre-crisis levels between the two countries, which amounted to about 250,000 visas yearly. 

The Algerian president also recently announced the opening of an in-depth investigation into the fire incident that took place at the Children’s Foundation in the municipality of Mohammedia, explaining that the investigation will cover all levels, starting with the institution’s doorman to the highest level. 

Algerian-French  relations are one of the most sensitive in the North African region, as they have a long history of complications, however the two governments have been working to address outstanding differences and reorganize cooperation between the two countries. Algeria continues to stress the importance of the security of neighbouring countries, especially regarding the recent challenges surrounding terrorist threats prevalent in the Sahel and North Africa.
