Libyan parties call for selection of new prime minister

The Libyan National Assembly of Parties (LNAP) has called on the Parliament Speaker Ageela Saleh to convene an emergency parliamentary session to select a new prime minister, urging lawmakers to resolve the issue without further delay amid Libya’s prolonged political stalemate, as reported by Libya Review on July 27th. 

In a formal letter addressed to Ageela Saleh, the assembly stated that the country’s current political deadlock and institutional paralysis have reached a critical stage and can no longer withstand any delays. It argued that decisive action that places the national interest is key to restoring stability in the country. 

The coalition stressed that it is not against the formation of a new government, as long as the chosen prime minister is selected from among candidates who have fulfilled all legal requirements and obtained the necessary endorsements from both the House of Representatives and the High Council of State. Appointing a new executive is a necessary step toward ending Libya’s institutional division and creating the needed conditions to organize Libya’s long-delayed national elections, as stated by the letter. The group said resolving the government issue would aid in the restoration of confidence in state institutions while pushing the political process forward.  

The National Assembly of Libyan Parties also placed what it described as a historic national responsibility on the House of Representatives, encouraging lawmakers to swiftly act and avoid any further postponement. It advised that continued delays would only deepen political division and undermine the efforts being taken towards restoring the country’s stability. 

The coalition said that holding an emergency parliamentary session would represent a decisive step towards breaking the political standstill, and pave the way for the electoral process that has been awaited by millions of Libyans. 

The appeal comes as political discussions continue over the future of Libya’s executive authority, with competing initiatives seeking to unify towards the establishment of a government capable of overseeing elections.
