Foreign powers test Libya’s sovereignty

As reported by Libya Gazette on July 27, Libya’s political future is being shaped by foreign powers as much as by domestic actors as recent developments show Washington preparing a possible diplomatic return. Massad Boulos, the Trump administration’s Arab and Middle East envoy, discussed Libya with Arab League Secretary General Nabil Fahmy.

Moreover, Egypt is resuming electricity exports after a debt settlement and Turkey is opening military channels with the Haftar camp.

Each move is presented as support for stability, sovereignty or cooperation but together they show how Libya’s internal division gives outside actors multiple entry points.
