Sudan Coalition launched by African rights campaigners
An alliance has formed between African human rights campaigners in order to try restore civilian rule to Sudan, The National reports on August 5th.
After a three day meeting in Nairobi, Kenya’s capital, the Sudan Coalition was formed on August 4th. Creating a unified African approach to the conflict in Sudan and supporting efforts to negotiate an end to the war are among the group’s top priorities.
The endeavors of the US, UAE, Saudi Arabia and Egypt to end the conflict in Sudan will all be supported by the Sudan Coalition.
The executive director of the African Centre for Democracy and Human Rights Studies (ACDHRS), Hannah Forster said the group would aim to increase African advocacy for Sudan on both the regional and international stage. Participants of the Kenyan meeting all agreed that a unified global message by African civil society organisations was necessary for change to be made.
The meeting was organized by the ACDHRS, the Centre for Justice and Accountability in Africa (Ceja) and the Sudan Knowledge Centre.
Forster highlighted that the ACDHRS was “committed” to giving the coalition all the “support and resources” it required. The charter of the coalition is likely to be finalised before the end of August 2026.
Since the Sudanese civil war began in April 2023, the conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has displaced 14 million people. The death toll is estimated to be in the hundreds of thousands with the UN describing the war as one of the “worst humanitarian crises” in the world.
The conflict has spread from its origin of Sudan’s capital Khartoum to most of the country. The army maintains control of large areas od northern, central and eastern Sudan including the capital, while the RSF dominate areas of Darfur as well as the Kordofan and Blue Nile regions.
