Libya to host international military exercise again
Libya’s Joint Military Commission has begun preparations for the Flintlock 2027 multinational military exercise during a meeting attended by representatives of the US Africa Command (AFRICOM) and Italy, as reported by Libya Review on August 6th.
The meeting was held at Al-Haniyah Camp as part of ongoing efforts to organize the next edition of the annual special operations exercise which is set to take place in the Sirte and As Siddada regions. According to the Libyan Military Media Division, the meeting marked the continuation of joint coordination following Libya’s successful hosting of Flintlock 2026, which was the country’s first time staging the multinational military exercise.
Participants reviewed the operational, logistical and technical preparations necessary for the event, while discussing mechanisms for coordination between Libya’s military institutions and the international partners involved in the exercise. The Joint Military Commission (3+3) is made up of six Libyan military officers, including three representatives of the Libyan National Army, and three from the Ministry of Defense of the Government of National Unity. The committee was established earlier this year to oversee Libya’s preparations for Flintlock while additionally strengthening coordination between the rival defense institutions.
Flintlock 2026 was hosted by Libya in Sirte in April, which brought special operations forces from more than 20 countries such as the United States, several NATO member states, Egypt, Türkiye and other African nations. Flintlock focused on improving a number of fronts such as interoperability, operational readiness and coordination between participating forces in tackling security threats.
AFRICOM organizes Flintlock yearly, and it is among Africa’s largest multinational special operations exercises. The aim of the exercise is to improve cooperation between partner nations, strengthen counter terrorism capabilities and enhance responses to cross-border security challenges and transnational crime.
Libya’s decision to continue preparations for Flintlock 2027 reflects the country’s current efforts towards expanding defense cooperation with its international partners while also reinforcing military coordination between eastern and western Libya.
