Algeria donates 4 army helicopters to Niger
The Algerian Ministry of Defence has donated 4 army helicopters to Niger on the 9th of August. According to Express DZ, the helicopters were donated in Niamey under the orders of the President of the Algerian Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
Two of the helicopters are MI-24V while the others are of MI-171 type. More arms and equipment, such as an undisclosed amount of ammunition, have also been sent, all received by the Nigerien general Salifou Maïnassara, Chief of Staff of the Nigerien Air Force.
“As part of strengthening cooperation relations between Algeria and the fraternal State of Niger, the donation from the Ministry of National Defense to the Nigerien Army, comprising four helicopters with all their equipment and accessories, arrived at its destination yesterday evening, Sunday, August 9, 2026, in execution of the instructions of the President of the Republic, Supreme Chief of the Armed Forces, Minister of National Defense,” indicates an open letter published by the Nigerien ministry of defense.
This exchange took place within a context of “reinforcement of bilateral cooperation between both countries, particulalry within the defence and security sectors, as well as expertise exchange”.
Algiers further presented this help and gift as an engagement towards Niger’s national security and their “fraternal and historical relations”. For Algeria, this donation also represents an important personal military security. As the two countries share nearly 1000 kilometers of border, Niger’s security and capacity to fight terrorist organisations on its territory, such as the Al Qaeda-affiliated JNIM or the Azawad Liberation Front, is a national security measure.
The donation symbolises a furthered diplomatic and military cooperation, announcing the potential end of a period marked by difficult exchanges, particularly after the Nigerien military coup of 2023, which put General Abdourahamane Tchiani in power. Algeria had pushed for some political exits out of the Nigerien crisis, an input unappreciated by the military junta currently in place.
As Morocco also tries to gain political and military traction in the Sahel, Algeria has actively re-established diplomatic relations with countries of the Alliance of Sahel States, seen for instance in its renewed diplomatic relations with Bamako, Mali. Kamel Ratieb, former Algerian ambassador to Bamako, has been sent back to ensure his previous duties on July 10.
