Libya strengthens its energy cooperation with African countries
The Minister of Oil and Gas in the Government of National Unity, received the Secretary-General of the Organization of African Petroleum Producing Countries and his accompanying delegation to discuss cooperation files between member states and developments in the broader African energy sector, as reported by Libya Eye on August 12th.
The meeting was held with a member of the OPEC Executive Council on Libya and a number of officials from the Ministry of Oil and Gas in attendance, and both sides spoke on ways to enhance cooperation between member states, and the role of organization in supporting the African energy sector and developing joint initiatives in this field.
The meeting also covered matters such as the latest developments related to the African Energy Bank, as well as a number of both technical and institutional initiatives, and preparations for the upcoming meetings of the Organization of African Petroleum Producing States.
Libyan Minister of Oil and Gas Khalifa Abdel Sadiq asserted Libya’s support for the activities of the Organization of African Petroleum Producing States, stressing the importance of strengthening its role in developing the energy sector at the continental level, and supporting cooperation frameworks among the petroleum producing countries.
The Minister also extended an invitation to FAO Secretary-General Farid Ghazali to participate in the Libya Energy and Economy Summit 2027, within the framework of strengthening the presence of African countries in events related to the energy sector and Libya’s broader economy.
The meeting comes in the context of moves aimed at strengthening African cooperation in the energy sector, and comes following recent security issues related to Libya’s energy sector, notably a drone attack that affected the Al-Zawiya refinery. The context also includes the discussing of initiatives and institutions aimed at supporting oil-producing countries and developing their capabilities in the technical, economic and institutional fields.
