Libyan committee warns fuel smuggling infringes on the state

The Technical Committee for the Review of Oil and Electricity Contracts warned of the continuation of excesses related to the energy sector, placing emphasis that fuel smuggling infringes on the capabilities of the state, as reported by LY Witness on August 22nd.

The committee said in a statement that its tasks include reviewing contracts and contractual policies of the sector’s institutions, verifying compliance with regulations in force, in addition to coordinating with the supervisory and accounting authorities.

It explained that its key competencies also include technical and periodic communication with the expert team of the Sanctions Committee under Security Council Resolution 1970 of 2011, in coordination with the Presidential Council as a way to ensure compliance with UN resolutions while preserving national sovereignty.

It was pointed out by the committee that it has completed a series of field and administrative investigations, and collected documents and evidence regarding abuses, which it referred to local and international authorities, stressing that a follow-up will be continued under the legal and institutional frameworks.

The committee confirmed that all individuals involved in the abuses are subject to legal prosecution without exception, regardless of their positions or managerial qualities, and that the facts will be referred to judicial authorities to take necessary actions.

Officials, employees and citizens who have information or documents relating to the smuggling networks or financial and administrative abuses were all called on by the committee to come forward and submit them through the approved channels, stating that they will all be dealt with in accordance with the legal frameworks in place.

The committee stressed that protecting the country’s wealth and ensuring that services and resources reach those who deserve them is a national duty. It concluded by emphasizing the continuation of the follow-up work to hold violators accountable in accordance with the laws and legislations in force.
